2024 Vat 32 Semillon Chardonnay
2024 Vat 32 Semillon Chardonnay
This is the third vintage of Vat 32 Semillon Chardonnay. It is a compelling blend of classically shaped Semillon and barrel fermented Chardonnay. The result is a delicious and unique style that sits comfortably as one of the very few multiple varietal blends within our range. Our first two vintages of Vat 32 Semillon Chardonnay were so well received that this label has become a mainstay in our brand.
This wine was originally introduced as a way to make use of the Chardonnay vines that had been planted in amongst the gaps of our Braemore vineyard over the past 50 years. We have since replaced those vines with more Semillon and now source old vine Chardonnay from Lovedale.

Winemaking Overview
-
In the Vineyard
We have now completed our program of marking, removing and replacing these 'rogue vines' with grafts from the existing Semillon vines. But the Chardonnay for the first two vintages of Vat 32 came from going through the whole vineyard and hand-picking these marked vines. The 2024 Chardonnay was sourced from an old vine vineyard in the Lovedale region of the Hunter. The Semillon is sourced from our Braemore vineyard.

In the Winery
The 2024 Chardonnay was was whole-bunch pressed and fermented in brand-new French oak hogsheads. The wine spent four months in barrel before blending with a parcel of Semillon from our Braemore vineyard. The blend is 56% Semillon and 44% Chardonnay. For those of you who have loved and bought Tyrrell’s Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon over the years, this wine is also for you. It might also give a little insight into my naming of the wine…

Tasting Notes
-
Appearance & Aroma
Youthful pale lemon with notes of fresh melon, stone and citrus fruits alongside pastry and fresh raw cashews on the nose.
-
Palate & Finish
It is seductive in its voluptuous texture from the Chardonnay. Then with a perfectly crisp acidity refreshing the generous flavours of ripe peach, Spanish melon and finger lime. There are hints of cashew and ginger marmalade adding another layer. Long and lingering with both varietals beautifully integrated.
WHEN TO DRINK
This wine is ready to drink now in its youth, while it's fresh and vibrant.
The Vineyards
Whilst I have always applied a no compromise, attention to detail approach to my winemaking, I truly believe that 90% of the quality lies in the vineyard. The key to great wine is ‘keeping it simple’ to preserve that potential quality from the vine through to the bottle - Andrew Thomas
